TISHOMINGO, OK – The Oka’ Institute at East Central University, in collaboration with the Chickasaw Nation, is proud to announce the launch of a pivotal economic impact study focused on improving water and wastewater infrastructure in the City of Tishomingo. This initiative is a key milestone in advancing the city’s resilience and economic vitality through sustainable water management solutions.
For over a decade, Tishomingo’s water and wastewater systems have faced continuous decline, compounded by the challenges of relying on a single water source, Pennington Creek. Recent drought conditions have further strained the city’s water security, pushing Tishomingo to take bold steps to secure alternative water sources and upgrade its aging infrastructure. The city’s proactive efforts to modernize these critical systems underscore a commitment to long-term sustainability and economic growth.
This groundbreaking study will thoroughly evaluate the return on investment and economic benefits of these infrastructure upgrades. Enhancements to Tishomingo’s water systems are expected to drive significant economic growth, create jobs, and attract business investments, fostering a vibrant and thriving community.
“Infrastructure is the foundation of community development and economic success,” said Duane Smith, Executive Director of the Oka’ Institute. “Our partnership with the Chickasaw Nation highlights our shared commitment to helping Tishomingo overcome its current challenges and secure a prosperous, sustainable future.”
Leading the comprehensive study is Brent Kisling, CEO of NextTo, with economic impact analysis directed by Dr. Kyle Dean from Oklahoma City University’s Center for Native American and Urban Studies. Their research will provide a detailed assessment of Tishomingo’s water and wastewater systems, offering a roadmap for prioritizing investments and guiding strategic planning.
The findings from this study will not only benefit Tishomingo but also serve as a model for rural communities across Oklahoma. By showcasing the tangible impacts of strategic infrastructure investments, the project aims to inspire similar initiatives throughout the state, driving widespread economic development and sustainability.
Tishomingo’s infrastructure improvements are expected to deliver profound ripple effects, including job creation, business attraction, improved public health, and economic diversification. These enhancements will position Tishomingo for long-term stability and prosperity.
Through this collaborative effort, the Oka’ Institute and the Chickasaw Nation are committed to supporting Tishomingo in becoming a hub of economic growth, sustainability, and community well-being.
