The future of Oklahoma's water and environmental industries depends on investing in the next generation of professionals. On June 26, the Young Water Professionals group of the Oklahoma Ground Water Association (OGWA), in partnership with Associated Environmental Industries (AEI), hosted its inaugural Young Professionals Field Day at the AEI ranch in Purcell, Oklahoma.
The event brought together students and early-career professionals from across the state for a day focused on practical learning, professional networking, and hands-on environmental field experience. Designed to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and real-world application, the field day provided participants with a firsthand look at environmental site characterization and the tools and technologies used by industry professionals.
Throughout the day, attendees rotated through a series of interactive demonstrations led by experienced environmental professionals. Participants observed live drilling demonstrations, examined environmental cores and samples, explored well construction materials, and learned how environmental scientists and engineers collect and interpret field data.
In addition to the field activities, participants had opportunities to build professional connections during a breakfast networking session and a special "Characterize Before You Remediate" Lunch and Learn presentation. These sessions allowed students and emerging professionals to engage directly with geologists, hydrogeologists, engineers, and environmental consultants, providing valuable insight into career pathways and industry experiences.
The success of this inaugural event highlights the groundwater industry's commitment to mentorship, education, and workforce development. By creating opportunities for hands-on learning and meaningful professional connections, organizations like OGWA and AEI are helping prepare the next generation of leaders in Oklahoma's water and environmental sectors.
The Young Water Professionals group is led by President Lauren Haygood, Environmental Science Chemistry Specialist at the Oka' Institute, and Vice President Mason Martinez, Environmental Science Specialist at the Oka' Institute, with support from OGWA Director Katy Anderson and the OGWA Board. Their leadership reflects Oka's ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of water and environmental professionals through education, mentorship, and hands-on learning opportunities.
Building on the momentum of this inaugural event, the Young Water Professionals group looks forward to expanding future programming and continuing to invest in Oklahoma's groundwater and environmental workforce through collaboration, education, and professional development.
At the Oka' Institute, we recognize the importance of supporting emerging professionals and fostering partnerships that strengthen the future of water resource management and environmental stewardship across Oklahoma.
