The Oka' Institute is excited to announce the release of the Juniper Evaluation Tool (JET) User Guide, a comprehensive resource designed to help landowners, natural resource professionals, researchers, and conservation partners make the most of the Juniper Evaluation Tool (JET). The guide walks users through every feature of the web-based application, making it easier than ever to explore, analyze, and apply landscape-level data for informed land management decisions.

The JET was developed to provide an interactive, science-based decision support tool for evaluating juniper encroachment across the Chickasaw Nation Treaty Territory. Users can examine vulnerability at multiple scales including parcel, county, watershed, and the entire study area to better understand where woody encroachment is occurring and identify opportunities for proactive management. The new user guide provides step-by-step instructions for navigating each of these scales and understanding the information available throughout the application.

The guide introduces users to the JET homepage, explains how to access the interactive mapping interface, and provides detailed instructions for using the platform's built-in tools. Users will learn how to:

  • Navigate between parcel, county, watershed, and regional views.

  • Search for properties and locations.

  • Switch between different basemaps.

  • Measure distance and area.

  • Customize map layers and legends.

  • Query and filter data using attributes such as tree cover, woodland transition, encroachment, dispersal and recruitment, intact areas, average slope, and juniper height.

  • Select areas of interest using multiple mapping tools.

  • Compare map layers with the Swipe tool.

  • Print customized maps and download available datasets for additional analysis.

One of the guide's greatest strengths is its emphasis on helping users move beyond simply viewing maps. It demonstrates how the JET can be used to summarize conditions across selected parcels, generate charts showing vulnerability stages and land cover, export attribute data, and support planning efforts with meaningful statistics. These capabilities help users better understand existing landscape conditions and prioritize management strategies where they can have the greatest impact.

Whether you're using the JET for the first time or are an experienced GIS user, the User Guide serves as a valuable reference that simplifies navigation and highlights many of the application's advanced analytical capabilities. From filtering thousands of parcels to comparing vulnerability layers or creating professional-quality map exports, the guide is designed to help every user confidently utilize the platform's full potential.

As development of JET 2.0 continues, the User Guide represents another important step toward making advanced geospatial tools more accessible to landowners, conservation organizations, and decision-makers throughout the region. The Oka' Institute remains committed to providing innovative resources that support sustainable land stewardship, improve ecosystem health, and empower communities with actionable science.
