Water Fest brought energy and excitement to East Central University this week as hundreds of 5th grade students from Ada and Byng gathered for a day centered on one of our most essential resources- water.

Hosted in collaboration with multiple partner organizations, the event provided students with hands on learning experiences designed to make water education both engaging and meaningful. A key part of making the day possible was the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, who helped host and support programming throughout the event.

Throughout the day, students rotated through interactive stations where they explored topics such as where water comes from, how it moves through our environment, and why protecting water resources is critical for the future. These activities were designed not only to teach but to spark curiosity and encourage students to think about their role in stewardship.

What made Water Fest especially impactful was the collaboration behind it. Bringing together organizations with shared goals created a dynamic environment where students could learn from a variety of perspectives and real world expertise. This kind of partnership reflects the broader work happening across our region to support sustainable water management and community resilience.

At the Oka Institute, education is a foundational part of our mission. Events like Water Fest allow us to connect with the next generation in a meaningful way, helping young learners understand the importance of water and empowering them to carry that knowledge forward.

As we continue our work in water research, planning, and land stewardship, opportunities like this remind us that long term impact starts with awareness and education. The curiosity and enthusiasm shown by students at Water Fest are a strong indication that the future of water stewardship is in good hands.
